A Nigerian nurse has reportedly been fired and deported from the UK after being reported for praying for a dying patient.
According to a Twitter celebrity doctor, Dr. Olufunmilayo, who shared the incident on social media, the nurse was found guilty of praying for a patient, which is deemed unacceptable in the British healthcare system. He explained that it is considered unethical for health workers or caregivers to bring religion into their work.
He added that even if a patient asks a nurse to pray for him, the nurse should invite a priest or cleric to perform the prayer instead of doing it herself.
He shared the story online to warn African health workers moving to the UK not to pray for patients to avoid suffering a similar fate.
“I have just read the sad story of a Nigerian woman who came to the UK employed by an agency to work as a carer for the elderly. She was assigned to care for an elderly patient who was dying, and she reportedly “prayed for the client to get better.” Yes She was fired and expelled.
For those expressing shock at the dismissal and expulsion, let me explain further. As a healthcare worker/carer in the UK, it is unethical to involve religion or impose your religious views on patients/clients. This is considered a breach of trust and an abuse of position.
You’re supposed to just do your job and focus on your job. Even IF the patient/client mentions a religious conversation, you must direct them to a pastor, chaplain, imam, religious or other religious figure. As a health worker; you should not engage in religious activities with a patient/client.
