AI continues to expand towards a new universe, that of death. It is now possible to speak to the deceased.
Artificial intelligence has become more and more efficient in recent years. Thanks to it, many innovations have been made. Recently, a new functionality was implemented: communication with the deceased. Thierry Ardisson had already experimented with this concept in his show Hôtel du temps. In the program, AI brought dead celebrities back to life to share their experiences. Although this innovative approach has had mixed success in France, it is experiencing significant growth in China. Indeed, some users interact with missing loved ones via virtual avatars generated by AI.
Chinese companies such as Silicon Intelligence and Super Brain have specialized in this area, offering an “emotional healing service”. Unlike simple recordings, these digital avatars generated by AI emit new sentences. This allows for a more immersive experience. Moreover, some testimonies have reported conversations with the deceased in places such as cemeteries. They used this technology to provide emotional comfort.
A technical feat that has existed for several years
It is possible to talk to the dead!
China launches into AI to avoid mourning
The AI uses various elements such as videos, photos and audio recordings of the deceased people to create a “cloned” digital avatar. Although this technology has already been promoted by companies like MyHeritage outside China, it is also generating particular enthusiasm in the Asian country. The process can take around a month, with costs estimated at “a few thousand euros”, according to BFMTV.
However, beyond the innovative and technological aspect, ethical and psychological concerns emerge. Johan Rochel, specialist in innovation law and ethics, expressed concerns about potential abuses. Indeed, the latter is worried that psychological disorders will develop following the excessive use of these technologies to avoid mourning. He also emphasized that the market is vast because it meets a fundamental human need to resist death. But that’s not all ! Possible deviations also manifest themselves on the customer side. AI enthusiasts have also created fictitious “relationships” with ex-partners. This trend therefore raises concerns about the use of these technologies to satisfy personal desires.
